My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It took me a while to realise that the plot wasn’t the main attraction of the story for the author, it was the fact that she wrote the book through the eyes of a five year old boy who has never seen the world outside that was her big selling point when she took it to a publisher. Personally, I find this the weakest part of the book. The storytelling capabilities of five year olds tends to be pretty limited and frankly gets annoying after a while, making it a gimmick more than a narrative tool or viewpoint. That criticism aside, the book is original and at times deeply moving but also superficial and boring for the first quarter.
